Post-match report

Portugal won and moved on to play the final match against North Macedonia.

Fernando Santos, the Portuguese national coach, made several changes to the team’s starting eleven, due to limitations, at the last minute, but fundamentally with the clear intention in controlling and dominating the game. In all sectors, the selected players demonstrate high efficiency in passing, receiving (Portugal performed 554 passes according to InStat) and in controlling the games intensity. The main changes were Diogo Costa as goalkeeper, Danilo Perreia, as central defender, João Moutinho at position 6 and Bernardo Silva as inner midfielder. Such changes promoted surprise, even in the players, as Otávio reported after the Portugal-Turkey: “I was surprised, but if you need me…”. However, this a landmark of the Portuguese coach. On the other hand, the Turkish coach promoted fewer changes but he changed the tactical system, placing more defenses and giving freedom to the forwards to be more available to explore the counterattack or the fast attack.

In the beginning, the Portuguese team was looking to control and dominate the game, with a shorting pass and supported game but, at the same time, aggressive in the search for finishing situations, close to the Turkish goal. The Turkish team start to play to close to own goal having some difficulty on the counterattack as a phase of strong pressure of the Portuguese team carried out in mistakes and the loss of possession of the ball. At 15 minutes after an offensive action involving collective involvement, Bernardo Silva, shot, the ball hitting the post and Otávio, who appeared alone at the far post, finished for the 1-0 of Portugal.

As usually, in the kind of match, one match winning, the Portuguese’s goal promote a match more intense and divided between teams, which better suits the Turkish team, creating some dangerous situations near the Portuguese goal. The Portuguese team tried to control the game, spending more time in its construction stage, coming out short and safely from behind, with the clear intention in drawing Turkey to higher spaces and later explore the back of the defensive line. However, the Turkish team, by a well high and intensive pressing, forced errors and managed to regain possession of the ball in actions with less effectiveness from the Portuguese defensive and middle line. During this period Diogo Costa was present in carrying out some important interventions. By the 21st minute, with Kutlu, in the area, and a dangerous heading, the ball passed so close to Diogo Costa’s goal post.

During the first half and towards the end, the Portuguese team reach the second goal, in a collective move in positional attack ending with Otávio’s cross to far post, where Diogo Jota appeared, behind the third defender, heading to bottom corner of the goal.

The goal and the moment allowed Portugal to go into the break with good support for the next 45 minutes and to prepare the rest of the match with a slightly different approach to what was happening until then.

In the second half Portugal came in dominating mode. In fact, the Portuguese team lowered his defensive organization by the placement of his defensive block close the goal, inviting the Turkish team to move up in the field and in organized attack phase, they create several situations to score the third goal. In this phase, when Portugal was controlling Yilmaz, at minute 65, develops a support movement followed by a break movements in the back of the central defender and score a goal that clearly reopened the game.

This important goal, react the Turkish team and the game was intense with several situations to finishing and danger in almost uninterrupted way.

The coaches tried to boost the attack and Stefan Kuntz put in Enes Unal replacing Kerem Akturkoglu, in the 66th minute, and Fernando Santos replacer Diogo Jota by João Feliz,in the 71st minute. In between, Portugal created another scoring opportunity by Otávio in the 71st minute.

Portugal tried to get more defensive consistency, putting in William Carvalho, but this substitution did not have the intended effect. The competition type (one game winning), the score, the Turkish attitude meant that Yilmaz had the best opportunity to make the draw. Using VAR, the referee was alerted to a touch by José Fonte on Enes’ foot in the penalty area, and a penalty was awarded. At the moment that may defined the course of the game, Yilmaz tried to place the ball in the upper left corner of Diogo Costas’ goal, but it went out too high. This moment cost too much to the Turkish team.

Coaches made several changes with different goals:

– Portugal looking to refresh and strengthen (and at the same time crack the game), put in Rafael Leão, Matheus Nunes and Nuno Mendes.

– From the Turkish side, Serdar Dursun, Dorukhan Toköz Yusuf Yazici entered with the purpose of making a last assault, based more on the determination and attitude of the Turks than tactics itself.

Turkey was fully balanced for the attack, looking for the goal that would give them the draw, promotes a natural defensive imbalance and Portugal in a counterattack scored through the combination between Rafael Leão and Matheus Nunes.

The difficulty and intensity of this game and the other game in the same group was very well described by the Portuguese national coach, in the end: “We could play with Macedonia or Italy, I always said that. These games are finals, and the finals are always unpredictable. We won the first and now we must win the second one. That will be our focus. We have to focus on Macedonia tactics, which will be a dramatic game, for sure. Beating Italy, North Macedonia will play the life”
